Just try walking down the street one day and say "Hi hope you're having a nice day" to people you are passing. They will look at you like you are from outer space. I love doing that both for their reactions and because it drives my wife crazy.

Yea but up here that would turn into

Hey---buddy can you spare $2.00 for bus fare, my car just ran out of gas and I need to get home and get my gas can. I must have heard that line a half dozen times this summer while walking my dogs, sometimes by the same guy on different days.

Had one girl approach my wife and say " I've probably asked you for money before but that was when I was on drugs. But now I'm getting myself straight and need money to feed my kids, that I just got back from child services"

Sat in my car outside the drugstore waiting for my wife one afternoon and watched a guy asking people for money as they went into the store.
Saw him get folding money from 5 people in 15 minutes plus change from others just to get him to leave them alone. If it was only a buck a piece that would be $20.00/ hr tax free. A couple of them gave more that 1 bill so that mean more that $20.00/ hr

Told my wife I was going to take the dogs down and sit with them asking for money to feed my dogs. Dog lovers are real suckers only problem they would have to lose a lot of weight to be believable

            Wow I better stop ranting

I grew up in Frederick, MD and then went to college in Harrisonburg, VA. In both places, it was common -- maybe even a little expected -- to say "hey" to people, strangers included, as you passed on the sidewalks. And if someone said "hey" and you didn't "hey" back, then you would be considered rude. When I moved to Amherst, MA to continue going to school (...and going to school, and going to school...), I started out by greeting strangers when walking around downtown. But I mainly elicted silent stares, with accompanying "who the heck are you and why the heck are you saying hi to me" facial expressions. My new friends also thought the practice was odd. So I eventually stopped. I'm not passing judgement, saying that one practice is better than the other, or that people in one place were friendlier than the other (folks in Amherst and surrounding towns were perfectly friendly). I just found the difference in customs intersting.

Here in Lincoln, NE, I find that a greeting by way of a nod between strangers is pretty common, sometimes accompanied by a "hey" or "how ya doin'?"

Sure, I wave. Have an 05 Evening Black T-Bird, haad the top down, waved at an 04 green going the other direction. Caught him by surprise, he spun around and in my side view mirror I saw him wave back. We have a distinctive care, worth recognizing one another. You never see the Z4 or TT cars wave at each other, probably yuppie snobs anyway.

Re: do you do the wave?

When we ride the motorcycle we always put our hand out to acknowledge a passing fellow motorcyclist or return the gesture. It is their way of acknowledging that they too "Get It", the thrill of riding. In the TBird we wave instead, also acknowleding the good taste someone has to own such an exquisite car.

I gave a thumbs up today myself...but I was in my Jeep. I didn't expect a reaction from the red T-bird driver coming my way, and sure enough no reaction at all. If I see another bird when I'm driving, I'll chase 'em down and keep waving until they at least look at me like I'm from Mars.
