Thinking that new tires are impervious to dry rot is a bad idea. My wife's car had 2 year old tires with low miles had dangerously severe dry rot on them. Luckily a mechanic saw them during an oil change and they were replaced by the manufacturer under warranty.

This thread is OLD and hardly relevant anymore. Furthermore why take the risk running on old tires

The thread may be old but with new members and members that may not be as savvy on auto-related issues it is still very relevant.

Were the tires actually 2 years old or had they been on the car 2 years? Often new tires in stock at tire stores are old stock thus the issue. My guess would be they were old stock tires that had been stored in hot conditions (loft, etc)

I also had dry rot on 2 year old Michelin tires with 20000 miles on them that had to be replaced.

They were dated 2 1/2 years before. Maybe a bad lot of tires ?? Who knows.

Another thing that would be interesting to know, were they name brand or off brand - Chinese tires? The Chinese tires have now come a long way, but a few years ago the Chinese made tires were truly substandard.

I wasn't aware that there were Chinese-made tires.

I'm familiar with various Japanese and Korean brands; Yokohama, Toyo, Sumho, etc.

Does anyone know names of some of the Chinese brands?

The Chinese brands are something you really have to watch for in the used car market. Dealers, especially non-brand dealers use them for the obvious reason of cost. it is something that I always keep an eye open for to help my customers get the most car for their money. I also quickly use it as a bargaining tool when a dealer states the car has new tires.

From my research Cooper tires are made in USA, one of the few companies that do. That said, name brand tires made in other countries, even China are not the issue - these tires are built under the same processes and guidelines as home parent companies. It is the off brand that do not have a US parent company that are the issue

Just a couple of comments - One, Discount Tire and any other tire seller have a tacit interest in not servicing any old tires - they want to sell tires. Two, it is sunlight that takes a toll on tires both by drying out the tire and ultraviolet light breaking down the tire it's self. Most of our Birds are garaged/stored inside out of the sun. This fact significantly increases the life span of tires. Three, routinely inspect your tires to include checking air pressure. Low air pressure results in blow outs due to the tire losing it's ability to dissipate the heat build up caused by highway speed driving. The tires on my 2002 are original tires with 28K miles on them. I won't be changing them anytime soon. Learned all this while doing traffic accident investigations as a state trooper.

Consumer Reports has a dubious reputation here? Why? It can't be because they favor their advertisers products because they accept no advertising. It can't be that they were fooled into testing a non production product because they buy anonymously at retail. The only reason I can think of for someone to bad mouth them is they didn't like a review of something they had already purchased.

Harry, I'm not the one who cast any aspersions on Consumer Reports. I think they are objective and reliable.

But other members here have quoted/cited or referenced their reviews in the past and some members questioned their objectivity, but it wasn't me.

You may want to take this up with the members who challenged the veracity of CR.
