My family was going to Cedar Point (amusement park in Ohio).

My parents, my kids(2), my brother & his wife & their kids(3), my Sister & her husband & their kids(3).

Sis has a van, most kids wanted to ride with her, the others wanted to ride with my mom & dad.

My brother & his wife wanted to ride with my wife & me.

We left from Tecumseh, Michigan about 7:30am, it's about 2 1/2 hrs trip.
Brother asked if I minded if he smoked, I answered "Yes, I kind of do".
We were only 10 minutes into this drive.
He made me go back to his house, to get his car so he and his wife could drive themselves.
This car was brand new & I don't smoke I just didn't want it to get all smelly. Was I wrong.

    Re: Smoking

As a reformed smoker, let me just say that smokers do not realize how they can offend a non-smoker. They really do not smell it like non-smokers do. It is a very touchy subject with them. I think it is because they know it is a threat to their health and is becoming a socially unaccepted act, but they do not like being reminded of it and they feel like they are being backed into a corner. That would put anybody on the defensive. I know it was a couple of years after I quit before it began to really smell bad to me.

CaptainKen has an especially low tolerance to cigarette smoke, dictated by his health. Because of that, we have had to curtail associations with both family members and some friends. But, when we visit their environments, we limit our visits, rather than ask them to not smoke in their own homes. We hardly, if ever, get in a car with a smoker.
Having said that, smokers should just take it for granted that non-smokers do welcome smoking in their homes or cars.

        Re: Smoking

I have never smoked, but grew up in a heavy smoking family (i guess I was a secondhand smoker! but not by choice)
My family makes me crazy by complaining that I DON'T allow smoking in my house (this includes porches) and cars (you just can't open the window wide enough, sorry!)
I can't go in my Mom's apartment because of the smoke (even if she hasn't smoked in 15-30 min) and I just got through telling Blunbird about my experience yesterday after my aunt's funeral, we went to a cousin's house where everyone smoked...They all know we have difficulty with it...I swear I think they smoked MORE and Blew it in our directions on purpose! Jerry couldn't breath all night and is totally congested this morning, my daughter had a headache all day and night, and my eyes are so swollen this morning it looks like I've been on a 5 day drunk!

Smoke in MY CAR? Ain't gonna happen!

PS...we won't be visiting this cousin at her house anymore, either.

          Re: Smoking

Just looking at this thread and I may have put it in the wrong forum. It was supposed to be smoking in your T-bird, but took on a life of it's own.

          MOD's please move if appropriate.

          Thanks

            Re: Smoking

I don't smoke and never have. I think what a person does in his own dwelling, and that could be expanded into their vehicle, is really up to them. However, I think we all have to be courteous. To respect someone's desire not to have their car smoked up is definitely the right thing to do. You were well within your rights to ask them not to smoke.

In your brothers case, I think he did the right thing by taking his own vehicle. This chemical has a strong addictive effect on some folks. I wouldn't worry about it, it was his choice.

              Re: Smoking

NO, you were not wrong...the brother with you was wrong. If they want to shorten their lives by smoking, more power to them, but they will not shorten mine nor those whom I love.

Not only do I have to pay increased insurance rates because of their addiction, but it really gripes me that I have to pick up their damned butts (cigarette) from curbside in front of my home. Thank God that most public places are now becoming smoke free.

Sorry for the sermon, but "it made me feel better" (where have I heard that said recently?)

Edited to remove "jerk" and substitute "brother".

                Re: Smoking

Never mind the medical reasons because I think there is little science supporting the second hand smoke debate, but you absolutely did not do anything wrong. The smell of cigarette smoke is awful and if you ever saw the filters on airplanes when they allowed smoking, you would be disgusted.

I would never allow anyone to smoke in my car. I don't want the smell, I don't want the small holes that can result from ash dispersal and I don't want anyone flicking ashes out my window. When my sister smoked in cars I took care of, I always had to rub out stains from the ashes she flicked.

Good choice...sorry, bro, smoke in your own car.

                    Re: Smoking

I agree with Blunbird, I smoked for years & years and after I quit it got where I couldn't stand to be around smoke. When I smoked I enjoyed it (some told me it was a nervous habit). Smoked everything: cigs, pipe, cigars.. So, not bad mouthing anyone, to each his own......

                      Re: Smoking

People need to be considerate of others, even when they have the right not to. Smokers should only smoke in designated smoking areas, and where their smoking doesn't bother others. I used to be a pack-a-day smoker, and tried to be considerate of others when I smoked. Now that I don't smoke, I just avoid being around smokers, or move upwind from them, that usually works for me.

Yes the wife & I both smoke, but never in the bird. Even with the top off we do not smoke in it. We both respect non-smokers rights and try our best to be considerate to them.

                          Re: Smoking

Poll needs one more option. I do smoke, but not in my new TBird.

I'm a smoker. I did not smoke in my 97 Bird for a couple of years after buying it. After the newness wore off I did smoke in it, but I'm sorry that I did. Had some cigarette accidents resulting in burn holes.

Don't think I will ever smoke in the '04 Bird. It's not my daily driver so I don't see the newness wearing off on this one.

I do not smoke in anyone else's car or house unless they give their permission.

First of all I agree with you on not smoking in your car; But I feel a need to ask, was this really a surprise, didn't you already know that they smoked and perhaps the subject should have come up before you all left.
BTW: any carbon based smoke is bad for you not just tobacco, some stuff just smells really bad when it burns.

You were not wrong!!!!! Several years ago when I was dating and had my new for me 53 ford, I used to keep a can of Lysol under my seat and if any one lit up (male or female) I would reach under the seat and spray out the end. I had one girl ask me why I didn’t try to kiss her good night after our only date, I said “If I wanted to kiss an ashtray I could do that any time”

Smoke in my car? You have got to be kidding.
