    Re: Smoking

NOBODY is smoking is my T-Bird!! Not with the top down, not with the window wide-open...........NEVER! Cigarette ash burns are always possible, and can you imagine what they might do to your soft top, boot cover or worse yet, leather seats?

Going back to the story that started this thread, if the guy who made you turn around and go back so that he and his wife could take their own car so that they could smoke, why didn't they ask beforehand? That seems idiotic to me that they didn't work it out in advance.

And furthermore, does this guy ever fly? What's he going to do, demand that the pilot turn around when they illuminate the NO SMOKING sign? It's not like they forgot the Columbian coffee in that one commercial!

Even smokers today know that smoking in public places is widely unacceptable, and knowing that, they should make provisions to isolate themselves if they insist on smoking in the presence of others. Even when I go to Las Vegas, I look for non-smoking tables, because I don't want to smell or breathe their second-hand smoke where it is still allowed amongst non-smokers in some places.
It's hard to soar with T-Birds when you drive amongst turkeys!

I have to admit, Amanda, this is the most creative rationalization for smoking I've ever heard. I didn't realize that one needed to smoke in order to live a full life.

            Re: Smoking

I pretty much don't smoke in my cars. I feel like I need to keep all my attention on the road, which of course, also means I don't talk on my cell phone when I'm driving!!!!!!

I try to be considerate of other people, and don't even ask if I can smoke in people's houses who don't smoke. I wouldn't want to "put them on the spot!"

I will not travel to states that don't allow smoking in restaurants. I don't travel to cities that don't allow smoking in restaurants. I will not eat in restaurants that have booths in their "non smoking" sections, but don't in their "smoking" sections. When dining with friends who are non smokers, I don't make an issue of having to dine at a restaurant that has a smoking section.

I have flown the Atlantic to England 2 1/2 times since flights are non-smoking, and haven't killed anyone yet because of a nicotine fit!!!!!

If anyone is interested, both smokers and non-smokers, the BEST electronic air cleaner is made by a company in Greenville, Tennessee. It's called Living Air and the telephone number is 1-800-989-2299 and it's made in the USA! Jim and I first came in contact with this when we were staying with friends in northern Kentucky. Our friend told us that her aunt, who was a realtor, used these machines to "cure" homes with really nasty smells! I think they also have one that kills bacteria!

I bought 2 electronic air cleaners from Sharper Image and spent GOBS of money on them and they AREN'T ANY GOOD!!!!! They don't do a good job of cleaning the air, and they're hard to clean! Their commercial, that they run ALL THE TIME is a "pack of lies" and they must have paid that guy who touts for them a whole lot of money, or he is an ignoramous!!!!!

I don't own stock in this company, I'm not even sure that it's not privately owned! Maybe I should call and check because if one can buy stock, it probably does better than my Schering Plough and Home Depot!!!!!!

About a month ago, there were 5 smokers in my living room, drinking and smoking. A young man came in to join us from outside, and the minute he came into my entry hall, he said "It smells SO good in here!" That was because of my Living Air machine!!!!!! It supposedly covers up to 3000 square feet, but my house isn't that large, so I don't know if it actually covers that much space.

When I go to my daughter's house, when I open up my suitcase, the smell of smoke doesn't overwhelm me anymore.

For the 1/2 time, did the plane go 1/2 way there, then turn back?

                Re: Smoking

I kind of like those non-stop flights, myself...hate it when they stop halfway.

                (especially mid-Atlantic!!)

                    Re: Smoking

Brother asked if I minded if he smoked, I answered "Yes, I kind of do".
We were only 10 minutes into this drive.
He made me go back to his house, to get his car so he and his wife could drive themselves.
This car was brand new & I don't smoke I just didn't want it to get all smelly. Was I wrong.
I think it is a simple matter of etiquette and respect. If they do not like your decision, which they did not, they should have done as they did or just lived with your decision. They should have have asked a little sooner though. The bottom line is that your car is yours and if someone gets put out over something like that then they probably are not your friends.

                            Re: Smoking

                            Phil,

What I should have said was that I've flown to England 3 1/2 times non-smoking. In 1996, I made reservations to fly from Dallas on American Airlines to London Gatwick on the last non-stop flight from the South that had a smoking section at GREAT expense, since we had to fly from Memphis to Dallas. Less than a month before our departure date, the president of American Airlines announced that as of June 1, 1996, all American Airlines flights worldwide would be non-smoking! Since our tickets were APEX, we were "up a creek!" Our flight over had a smoking section, but our flight back was non-smoking!

If we had known, we would have driven to Atlanta, spent the night with my brother David, and flown British Airways as we did in 1992 and 1999!

If any of you have ever changed flights in Dallas, you know what a hassle that is!

I will NEVER EVER fly American Airlines again! They knew when I made my reservations that they were going to change their policy before my return flight!

I drove to northern Kentucky in 2002, spent the night with friends, and flew non-stop on Delta to London Gatwick! That's what I'll do from now on!

                                Re: Smoking

You were not wrong. Your vehicle, your rules. I had a hole burned in the seat of a brand new (week old) Bronco, by a smoker. I never could stand being in a car with smoking, but that is when I no longer allowed it in my cars.
