Missouri Man Spits on Jane Fonda

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - A man spit tobacco juice into the face of actress Jane Fonda after waiting in line to have her sign her new book, police said.

The man ran off but was quickly caught by police Tuesday night and charged with disorderly conduct.

Fonda has been on tour and doing interviews to promote her just-published memoir, ``My Life So Far.'' The thrice-married, two-time Academy Award winner covers a wide array of topics, including her 1972 visit to Hanoi to protest the Vietnam War, during which she was photographed on a North Vietnamese anti-aircraft gun. She has apologized for that photo, but not for opposing the war.

Capt. Rich Lockhart of the Kansas City Police Department said that although Fonda did not want to press charges against Michael A. Smith, 54, of Kansas City, he was arrested on a municipal charge of disorderly conduct after off-duty officers caught him just outside Unity Temple, where Fonda was signing books.

Lockhart said Smith was released on bond late Tuesday night and is due to appear in municipal court on May 27.

Smith, a Vietnam veteran, told The Kansas City Star on Wednesday that Fonda was a ``traitor'' and that her protests against the war were unforgivable. He said he normally does not chew tobacco but did so Tuesday solely to spit juice on the actress.

``I consider it a debt of honor,'' he told The Star for a story on its Web site, www.kansascity.com. ``She spit in our faces for 37 years. It was absolutely worth it. There are a lot of veterans who would love to do what I did.''

Fonda drew a crowd of about 900 for her appearance, said Vivian Jennings, whose Rainy Day Books of suburban Fairway, Kan., sponsored the event at Unity Temple in Kansas City. Fonda, 67, spoke for about 15 minutes, answered questions for another 15, then began signing copies of her book.

Jennings said Fonda received a standing ovation when she came out and when she finished speaking. Alan Tilson, one of those who had his book signed but left before the incident, said the crowd was very ``warm and supportive'' to Fonda and he was surprised to learn what had happened.

Jennings said the actress never got up from her seat and continued autographing books after the tobacco juice was wiped off.

``The important thing is that she was so calm and so gracious about it,'' Jennings said of Fonda. ``She was wonderful.''

Jennings said that the man had a book to which the name ``Jody'' had been affixed as he approached to have it autographed. She said that when Fonda got the book, she looked up and said, ``You're not Jody.''

``At that moment, he turned his head quickly and spit a trail of tobacco juice,'' Jennings said. ``He immediately jumped off the stage and started running down the aisle.''

Fonda, who flew to Minneapolis Wednesday for another appearance on the book tour she began April 5, issued a statement through Jynne Martin of Random House, which published her book.

``In spite of the incident, my experience in Kansas City was wonderful and I thank all the warm and supportive people, including so many veterans, who came to welcome me last night,'' Fonda said.

I guess the question I want answered is supposedly a group of POWs gave her some notes to give to their families back home, and I understand she handed those over to the guards, for which they were severely punished... I would really like to know if that was true, I don't give a flip about a photo op sitting in an AA gun, but I do if she did our POWs that way... Any body "really" know..?

Jim, I heard it the same as you. She also came back and said how wonderfully our comrades were being treated which we all know was a lot of bunk. As far as I am concerned she took her freedom of speech a few steps too far.

I'm actually proud that many people who suffered because of her, remember the history well. No, I will not forgive either...she doesn't deserve it.

Read back through this thread, which BTW started out as a very nice experience I had at lunch. What transpired caused a very good member and patriot, OlDave, to pretty much leave the site........and has put me on the verge of leaving as well. Just recently, one of the vocal supporters of Ms Fonda in the "Lunch Today" thread and I had another little go around. He eloquently told me: "go s--t in your hat."

For those of you who want to say that she was just protesting!!!! 12 Airmen that day managed to get scraps of paper to which they each wrote there SSN and names, then as she came threw the line to "great them for the cameras" they each palmed them to her, once the lights and cameras were off she handed them to the commander of the prison who then beat all twelve airmen, four of which DIED!!!! and two others permenately disabled! So to say she was just protesting! Give me a break that women should have been shot for treason and though I may not have been a Vietnam Veteran, I AM A VETERAN! So please do not sit here and say she is a "nice women" she is a scumbag liberal who hates america and hates you the common people and DO NOT FORGET THAT she is a murderer!

                    ---------------- M E R G E D ---------------

Ok I have walked away and thought about this for a moment. We veterans will NEVER FORGET! As for everyone else, you are entitled to your opinion. I for one will not talk about this again but will say this I would gladly stand up and do what this man did! Please feel free to forgive this trator if you must. I for one will not and if I am wrong for that so be it, God will let me know when I meet him!!

Typical Hollywood type, the laws do not apply to them. Surrounded by 'yes' men who tell them how wonderful they are. Out of touch with the real world.

Bravo to Mike Smith. Personally, I wouldn't waste my spit. Those of you who have never served in combat for your country may never understand the feelings of those who have. After Vietnam, I cannot hear the National Anthem sung at a football game without tearing up. All my emotions changed when I saw the bravery, dedication and love for the United States which was displayed by my comrades. Peacefully protesting our country's policies is a hallmark of democracy. That's why we served then and why so many brave servicemen and women serve today. What Jane Fonda did was cavort with the enemy and allow herself to perpetuate the belief that the North Vietnamese were right in their desire to rule the South. To my many friends and acquaintances on this site who have never served I undertand that you can't see why we feel as we do. Protesting is one thing. aiding and abetting our enemies is another.

Whatever atrocities Hanoi Jane committed were more than offset by her appearance in Barbarella, in my book.
