There were 68,098 Retro Birds made, and 6,979, or 10.2%, did not have a hardtop.Originally posted by Rondor View Posti am surprised at how many ads I see for retro's for sale with no Hard Top. Of the 68,000 plus sold any Idea how many were without a Hardtop. It appears to be half or more.Quickdraw

In 2005 there was a production shortage of hardtops and for that year 21.5% did not have a hardtop. Considering the hardtop was a $2000+ option for all years it's kinda surprising they sold so many. Many people in the warmer states rarely put their hardtop on.Originally posted by TommyT View PostJust wondering why the 6,979 produced didn't have the hardtop ?Quickdraw

Interesting question Tommy. I wonder about what period of the 4 years of production you could buy a Bird without a HT. I'd bet that half (especially in warm weather states) have their tops stored with years between installation? Love the look of the HT but top down driving always prevents my using it.Originally posted by TommyT View PostJust wondering why the 6,979 produced didn't have the hardtop ?Bill Coates-Canfield, Ohio

My sons new to him retro was from Hertz and I believe none of them came with hardtops. Harry, can you tell how many cars were sold to Hertz?. BTW Harry, thanks for the Hertz info, the previous owner didn't even know about that.

Bob, Hertz didn't get any 2002s but bought 906 2003's, 150 2004s and 190 2005s for a total of 1,246 Hertz units.Originally posted by Brad View PostMy sons new to him retro was from Hertz and I believe none of them came with hardtops. Bill, RE: "I wonder about what period of the 4 years of production you could buy a Bird without a HT"
you could buy any year Retro without a hardtop but you also had to settle without chrome wheels - the only cars that had a mandatory hardtop were the special editions for all four years.Quickdraw

Agree Tommy, it's a win/win when you like it both ways. For me I prefer Pic one over pic two.Originally posted by TommyT View PostExcellent information given Harry and I thank you...For myself I like the top off.But I must admit that with the top on the car takes on a whole new look much sleeker and lower looking and feeling...Attached Files

Thanks Tommy....I sold it last year, as it was approaching 33K miles, and $18K in the hand was attractive at the time. I still keep one eye open for a Merlot with under 20K miles.Originally posted by TommyT View PostThanks Ric..Is that your T-Bird pictured ? If so it is awesome looking both ways !!

My 2005 did not come with a hardtop. I bought it in 2006 when it was a year old. I had been looking for a retro but never came across one without the hardtop, which I did not want.
To me, it's a summer car, stored winters here in Minnesota. The hardtop would be something else taking up space in the garage. I have a friend in Wisconsin with 2 retros, both with hardtops. He had varmints attack the headliner on one of them while the top was sitting on it's rack. Another reason to not have the hardtop. To each their own.
