  • Mouse nesting in trunk

My satellite radio died earlier this week (Antenna warning) and when I opened the trunk, I discovered very clear signs that a mouse has been nesting in there and a chewed antenna wire. So today, I took everything out, repaired the wire, and found the nest. It built a nest over the back right tire well, and had used the green installation pads from both wheel wells for nesting material.

I'm not sure what purpose those green pads serve, but assume it is likely some small amount of sound proofing for road noise.

Any suggestions for material to use to replace those pads?

A few years ago I took my Oldsmobile in for service and they found a mouse nest in the Air Cleaner. Since then I always keep a little Decon feeder open for them. I don't see anymore mice but I have to keep replacing the Decon. Plus we have Sam the neighborhood cat, He likes to roam around in my garage if I forget to close the overhead door. I've seen his footprints on my car and once I left the door up all night and he slept on my convertable top and left cat hair all over it. Leroy

I am not sure what you are talking about. When I completely insulated the back of my car with sticky foam foil and dense foam padding, I saw no insulation in those areas.

The only insulation I found was down at the bottom of the top well which was about one square foot on each side!!???? Not enough to deaden anything!

I wonder if the state will wand to talk to you about the transport of unlicensed pets!!????

I've been at war against mice for years and have killed dozens in the house, in the shed, in the garage, etc. (I'm guessing at their rate of reproduction, I'm losing quite badly); so much for building on prior farm land. We have plenty of farm cats in the area, plus foxes, and birds of prey, but every winter the mice come inside to get warm. Any one know of a piper I can hire

Icebluebird - your description matches mine - one square foot of material on each side (green and about 1/2 inch thick - with a hole in the center where it was attached via a bolt). I figured it might be important. I guess I'll find out one way or the other.

            Icebluebird,
Did this method of using insulation in the Bird's trunk lower the road noise noticibly? Would you do it again? Or not worth the trouble?

What exactly did you use? And besides the wheel wells where else?

I ask because I'm concidering it for my Bird.

Just read IceBlueBird's postings under the Thread heading ROAD NOISE.
              Answered all my questions.
              Thanks!

                Leroy,

Watch those cats on your roof!!! They also like to work their claws on the fabric leaving holes for the rain to come in. It happened on our XL Convertible some years ago.

No Mice or Rats around here ... Napoleon & Boo, my adopted outdoor kitty, see to that. I swore I saw a rodent when I pulled in the driveway early evening helping himself to Boo's Cat Chow by the garage door but he scurried into the shrubs..

The next morning I opened the front door to find a rather unpleasant gift: A nearly decapitated mouse with Boo sitting in the wicker chair stretched out resting on the front porch waiting for me to leave for work.

I called his name and he looked over at me while working on his front claws like ...

"Yeah, I wanted you to see I took care of it ... All in an evenings work. Now time for a nap."

Try some mice and rat killer called Havoc. Only thing is they look like Rice Crispy treat, so watch where you place them. You can hear the mice cry at night with there belly aches. Quite effective.

I unwrapped my hard top yesterday (plastic, then an old car cover, then the hard top cover on top) and much to my dismay a mouse had gotten in and gnawed a hole (about 2" square) in the liner.
I patched it with some black fabric and it does not look bad. I hate them meeces to pieces!
                      Anyone had a headliner installed?

Meow - the other thing that works is moth balls. Since some larger predator took out my cat and had to get a kitten so until the kitten matures a little I'm without a deterrent. What I've done is thrown a bunch of moth balls in the nooks and crannies of my garage. Seems to be working and the moth ball smell isn't that bad in the garage. The other thing I do is put the bird in a bag ( http://www.autoanything.com/car-covers/69A1798A0A0.aspx ) which keeps them out of the bird

I used to use moth balls in my pontoon boat when storing it covered outside but the smell in the spring of the year took a long time to disappear. What I found that works just as good is "Dreft" dryer sheets. The smell is much more pleasant.

You say moth balls – that reminds me of a situation I had. A few years ago I have squirrels invade my attic. I tried the red fox urine as suggested by an exterminator but that had no positive result. So I purchase dozens and dozens of moth balls and placed them all over the attic and a heavy concentration where I knew they were getting in. The next evening when I got home from work it looked like it had snowed. The darn squirrels had carried every moth ball I had placed in the attic out of the attic and dropped them in the front yard. Unbelievable sight.

Roger - thanks for the Dreft heads up. I had used moth balls in Omaha, but then left for the winter while the house was for sale. Well I received comments that the house smelled "funny" one said it smelled like old people. Since I wasn't there to smell it myself, the realtor went over and found that the smell from the moth balls was coming into the house. So she had to get under the Tbird and in the nooks of the garage to remove the balls and then air out the house. So while there are also mice here in the garage, I haven't put out any moth balls. So far have just been relying on bait stations from the exterminator. They had built a next last year in the Explorers engine, but so far have left the bird alone. Oh but I hate those darn things!
