  • From 243HP to 259.5HP!

I just got back from dyno/install/dyno and am DELIGHTED with the difference in responsiveness that the K & N 69Series Typhoon cold air intake has made! Feels like a new car! Better torque, opens up smoother, sounds deeper -but not alot, unless you jump on it.

    243HP peak, pre-installation. 259.5 post-installation!

I had a hard time finding someone locally that had a dyno so I could do a pre/post installation comparison, and someone suggested I check out Sneeds Speed Shop in Pfafftown. At first they told me it would be $100 just to hook it up (and just to read at the wheels!). Then I told them what I was doing it for and they said, "Well, how about we install your K&N and dyno on either side for $140 total?".
*was i in a weird parallell universe?*
    "SOLD!" I said.

You know, I had no problem with putting it on. It's just a simple bolt on bit. But they were amazed at how well it went on and the fit. I know that K&N doesn't list the 2005 TBirds as Typhoon-fit, but there were absolutely NO ISSUES at all with the fit or installation. Mine is not to wonder why.....

They loved how it looked and were really impressed with the car overall. Matter of fact, Kenneth wants to buy his wife a "turquoise one". Anyone know of one for sale?

I hope you can read the attachments. It's very exciting. Have an AWESOME weekend!

    The facts speak for themselves!.

You did it right and now, even I am interested.

Is this a Ford trick that it came in at 243 HP, or do they measure differently?

    Thanks

      CV,

No "Ford trick". This was done at an independently owned Speed Shop.
I asked them to just give me a simple dyno "at the wheels" (so all they are doing is measuring torque and horse power "where the rubber meets the road" -nothing at all on the diagnostic-ish computer-ee stuff).

Some call this kind of dyno a "chassis dyno". Same thing.

If you go to the K&N Engineering site you can pull up what your year vehicle "should" do after installation. They guarantee that your horses will improve or they'll refund your purchase price. Ford measures hp differently than K&N since K&N measures hp and torque at the wheels. Not in a wind tunnel....

In my case however, since I drive the '05 (Cashmere), it is not listed for anything but a FIPK unit-nothing like 69Series Typhoon (but I'm not dis-ing the other at all. I think K&N is solid). So what I did was enter "2004 Ford Thunderbird" and up pops "Typhoon" and other stuff.

Then I printed out the Dyno for THE 2004 TBird and took it with me. It was all I had to go by. I suppose I coud have printed the results for the 05 FIPK, but....why? Those weren't the apples/oranges mix I had in mind -and I presumed that the 04's would be essentially the same as the 05. This is what the 2004 K & N Dyno for the Typhoon Series read: http://www.knfilters.com/dynocharts/69-3520_dyno.pdf

And here is the dyno chart for the 2005 model year with the Generation II FIPK intake:
      http://www.knfilters.com/dynocharts/57-2562_dyno.pdf

The 2004 only showed a 7.98hp increase at 5379 rpm, from 203.27hp to 211.25hp with the same CAI I had just installed.

What I don't understand is why there is such a disparity btx the 04 and the 05?

I sent K&N my dyno charts (the fellas at Sneeds were so jazzed they burned me a copy onto cd) and asked them if they could please explain the "Huh?" and "How come dat?" about the disparity. I'll update this post when I hear back.

If I can be of any help CV please don't hesitate to holler!
      Sometimes I don't break things...

        Re: From 243HP to 259.5HP!

The stock air filter has a lot of restiction because of the two very small inlet snorkels.
I had removed the stock air fliter box and pulled off the plastic cover that the snorkels are on. It just snaps off.

That allowed the filter to have a larger fresh air opening, no restirction.
Then just put the stock air filter box back in the car.
the car had much more power at higher RPM.
But it's my wifes car and she did not like all the noise the unrestricted air intake made when she drove it. (it sounds good to me)

Oh, I also removed the top plastic engine cover so the intake manifold would get more air moving over it to cool it down.

        Cost $0
        Improvement= more fun

But if the wife is not happy I am not happy. LOL

Smart, smart man you are Mr. Flash! Keep that wife happy!....
(I just now stuck a link in post # 3 on this thread for the 2004 and 2005 Dyno charts.
          You may find it interesting).

I know taking the engine cover off would definitely help cool things down, and a cooler engine is a better running, more efficient engine, it's just that it's so pretty....

Have a terrific Saturday! And keep that wife of yours HAPPY!

I have considered taking the engine cover off, but wonder if there are any reasons, other than cosmetic, why it should be left on. Does it serve any protective purpose?
            Thanks,

              884 Fearless,
I bought the Tbird for her, She had a 57 back in the day with her first X Hubby. She likes me to drive her around in it.

She never says a word about my BMW motorcyle with the after market exhaust and power chip, that helps it go 155 MPH.
              That she never gets on.

Patte - I don't know if Don Fox ever had my Moondoggie dynoed after he had the Borlas installed and before I bought it from him, but I have since also added the K & N and Moondoggie dynoed out at 314hp (3 tests, all within a fractional +-314). Are you planning to put Borlas on? vrooooooommmmmmm..........!

Wow! Elle! That is VERY IMPRESSIVE!!!
Hey Yeah! You kiddin'? Borla's -for sure! And the K & W Coilovers as well. I'm looking to get into the 130 Club at Bonneville next year. I wouldn't get on the salt without the KW's though, the Bird just gets too "floaty" in triple digits (...so I am told....ahem....).

But I won't be doing anything for a while right now. Couldn't get away from NC as planned today to get out West. Out of commission. Multi-vehicle pile-up on I-40 W on way home to Winston-Salem claimed the rear end of my beauty. Big ol Dodge van ran up my a** end. Also took me out for who knows how long. There'll be no driving for me and my Bird for a while. I'm just thankful to have walked away from it. This bit really shook me up. And I've survived alot!

I made them (the bad man's insurance company)tow it home though.
All 144 miles from Newton Grove. My Bird goes where I go!
Nobody puts baby in a foreign garage....

My dog, 13 year old Maltese/Dachsund did really well on this bang-up. She shows no signs of injury at all. I'm so grateful for that.

I'm sure open to ideas for more HP at the wheels, and any other safety concerns too, if you have any, -looks like I'm going to have some time on my hands. And Elle, it sounds like you know a thing or two about a thing or two!

Hey, when we're good, y'wanna lay a scratch?
Know anyone w/a hot pink hankie?

May be able to make Choo-Choo if my bird and I are able by then.

Question: Elle, what is this "MoonDoggie" of which you speak and this venerable Don Fox, is he Carolina/Virginia local-ish? He owns a speed shop -yes?

I think the 100mg Demerol is kicking in....I should go before I give up my security clearance!

Yeah, sounds like the demerol kicked in!! So sorry to hear about the accident, and I hope both you & your Bird are well on the mend now.

To answer your questions...Moondoggie is my Cashmere Bird (see my sig pic). TBN member Don Fox was MD's previous owner. I had the Bird shipped from Sacremento two years ago. I don't race MD - or any car - it was just nice to find out what the HP was. Also, MD will not be at Choo Choo - I'm driving Goldilocks (my other Bird) to that event.

Again, well-wishes to you that you heal soon, and glad your doggie wasn't hurt!

People in AR must wear seat belts, but if they're on a motorcycle and > 21, no helmet is required. Does this make sense?

I'm glad you dog is OK. Our dog loves to ride, too.

Thanks Ms. MoonDoggie for your kind understanding about the world of pharmacology! Feeling better (no more Demerol every day!). That stuff'll twist yer britches for a bit!

I wouldn't race MD either, ahem, (kicks dirt) er,or ANY car for that matter (my insurance meister maybe trolling...).

Really it's just a pleasure to drive topless- which Winston-Salem is seeing much less of since being off the Demerol....LOL
