  • Most miles from one fill up?

    Hi there,

Usually I get around 250 miles from one fill of the gas tank with the bird. However, this is mainly to-from work miles with lots of stops and starts.

Last weekend we took a 150 mile drive, stayed overnight and then drove home on Sunday. It's now Wednesday and I just realized I have not filled the tank for a while. Checked the mileage and it's telling me I've done 395 miles from one tank. The light did come on just as I pulled into work so I'll be filling up at lunchtime. I've never really bothered checking the mileage and fuel economy but I just wondered what the highest mileage that anyone may have got from just one tank of gas. I may have had more than 395 before but just never realized it.

My record with our Infiniti FX is 432 miles but that can't be compared because the tank is bigger than the bird's tank.

    Just curious.

    Gordon.

    Gordon,

I concur, we have taken our 02 on a number of long road trips and it is usually close to 400 miles between fill ups travelling at around 65 mph. Of course the temperatures also come into play, but the car seems to like 65 to 70 degrees for optimum fuel milage.

On our trip to Maggie Valley NC a few years ago we averaged between 30-32 mpg, which shocked me (in a positive way).

When we first got her in 2002, we would chicken out and fill up with gas in the 02 at 390 on long trips. It usually had a gllon or two left. the 03 owners were talking about 410 and 420 between fill-ups on long trips.
Would have to get the little book out and figure out what we get now on it.

The longest I have ever pushed our 02 was 400 miles, usually fill up around 350 to 375. It's not advisable to run it below 1/8 tank.

For Lady Thunder Cruise we drove 230 mi. and filled up with 10 Gal. for 23mpg at 70-80 mph I'm happy with that.

This all very interesting to learn how far you all are willing to push your luck between driving & walking.

But a word of caution needs to be inserted. Beware of going to long on a very low tank of gas. The fuel pumps are in the fuel tank and they are kept cool from the gas bath they receive by being submerged in the tank.

Oh Yeah, Ed. It all sounds so good when you say it fast. But I happen to know that you got a couple of those gallons of gas FREE for your trip home from the event. So, that does not count when you are figuring your miles per gallon and the cost. Are you all confused now? Besides, Isabel talks faster than you drive - - so you have to factor that in.

Plus, wasn't your car heavier on the way home after the cruise? Doesn't that affect the mpg somewhat??

Our "around town" and city drives give us about 13/14 mpg. We are not planning on taking our T'bird on any long road trips. It isn't comfortable enough to be in hour, after hour, after hour. Don't get me wrong, it is not an UNcomfortable car - just not comfortable enough for a road trip. We have had the car for less than 6 months and haven't put more than 500 miles on it.

I love the new car commercials where the new owner talks about how he/she doesn't have to fill his/her tank as often as they did with his/her old car.

This is a useless fact not knowing the size of the fuel tank in both vehicles and actual miles driven per tankful,

I drove to Bakersfield and back last Sunday. A lot of up and down hills between L.A. and Bakersfield. I got 25.3 MPG. average 70 mph. I thought that was real good. Now I'm curious to see what the tbird will do on a flat road.

We keep the tanks in both vehicles at least half-full all the time. I'm currently averaging about 19-20 mpg in the Bird around town...that drops to about 17-18 during the summer as I use the AC and put on the hardtop.

Craig, Sorry to hear you feel the Bird is not comfortable for long trips. In our case we feel the very opposite. We went from a full size 1998 Buick sedan to the 05 Bird back in Nov. of 2004. We have driven our Bird on many long trip over many different types of road, sometimes with the HT sometimes with the convertible up or down. Our longest has been from our part of Washington St down to San Diego, CA & back again.

Our 2005 has been and still is after just slight of 40,000 miles.

If you can you ought to bring your Bird on down to the all Thunderbird meet at Dearborn and talk it up with some of the others, maybe there is something not right with the suspension.
