I agree with Mike. You should drive to Dearborn for the 55th Anniversary. That would add at least 20 miles to your car.

We bought our 2005 Cashmere in the Roanoke VA area last October and drove back to MI. We've taken some local cruise trips. Over Easter weekend we drove to Washington DC, down to Assateague Island, up to Lewes DE, ferry to Cape May NJ, then home to Detroit MI area. We were very comfortable. We actually bought the car to use for road trips. Craig, sorry you don't find yours comfortable.

I'm with Craig; wouldn't say it's uncomfortable but my daily driver "fits" me better (6'4"). For me, I think it is one of two things. Either I'm a little less relaxed driving it since it is new for me and I'm worried something might happen to it or, more likely, the seat size/configuration puts some pressure on the upper back/shoulder area. I've played with the settings including the lumbar support, but I haven't found "true comfort" yet.

Having said that, it sure is the most "fun" car I've ever had and I always think about driving it first when I walk into the garage!

Hi there,

On my daily driving to/from work I'm averaging around 15 m.p.g. in the bird. On a long trip which would include both interstate and country roads I seem to get around 24 m.p.g.

I think there is a cut-off point between the modern smaller engines 1,000 c.c to 2000 c.c, (more popular in Europe), and the bigger V6 and V8's more popular over here in the states.

When I lived in Scotland we had a Fiat Uno Turbo which had a 1300 c.c. engine and was very economical around town but struggled a little on long runs down the motorway when it would get really thirsty.

The bigger engines suffer around town, partly because of the extra weight to stop and start all the time. They are more efficient at constant higher speeds when they get into their stride and the forward momentum is more constant.

Now, after having the experience of driving small engined European cars and also the bigger engines more popular over here, I reckon the most economical all-round engine size would be around 2 litres. Small enough for in town driving but just about powerful enough to haul efficiently on a long trip.

Course, this is just a generalization because all engines are quite different and designed for different purposes.

Hi, on the subject of comfort our '03 is fine for about the first hour and a half. Then our legs get numb. Time for a 5 minute stretch. I think it might be the seats being stiff. I recall a reply to a post about 6 months ago about a guy saying 04-05 seats too soft. Is there a difference besides the rolled and pleat going front to back instead of side to side as in the 02-03s? I have only sit in an 02 and my 03. Thanks ,John

My LS and TBird are mechanically identical. (The Tbird might be a bit heavier with the hardtop on.)

Per the LS computer, the best "live" MPG I've been able to get is about 28.

Not scientific, but I'd rather take this figure and multiply it by the capacity of the tank to reach a max miles projection than running the gas tank too far down.

From Bristol Tn . To Toledo OH on one Tank almost 500 miles, that was before COP problems now it gets around 20 mpg on 6.5 cyl.

Then I woke up and discovered it was just a very pleasant dream!

Mike, Paul, Merle................. I really enjoy driving the car but the seats would have to be more comfortable for me to want to go on a lengthy road trip. I have long legs and the depth of the seat is not that great and could use a little more padding. It is not TERRIBLE like some or even most cars but I am very picky when it comes to my comfort level in a car. Actually, it is better than I had originally thought before I ever sat in 02 - 05. I am NOT disappointed at all because we did not buy it with the thought that we would be taking it on long trips.

Paul......... Good one! LOL. Actually the first 4 months (November - March) we barely put 200 miles on the car! We bought the car so my wife and I could go cruising with the top down in nice weather. (The car's top.......... although.........)

I own two Ford vehicles with the on board mileage computer, 2007 Edge & 2008 Focus. Both seem very generous in their calculations compared to my calculations for the same tankfuls.

My theory is that they are made that way to make us feel better about the "mileage" we are getting. It just seems a little coincidental to me that they are both off about 2 mpg on the high side.
