Re: I Give UP
I don't blame you. I'd be really PO'd too.
The incorrect diagnosis of a WORKING compressor is nearly criminal. At best it's incompetence ...... at worst it's a deliberate attempt to remove a few extra bucks from your wallet.
A working compressor with enough refrigerant in the system to make cold air come out of the vents, as you observed, will reveal itself with the VERY LOW TECH shade tree mechanic observation of a temperature difference between the low pressure and high pressure lines under the hood.
A dead compressor makes no cold at all. A live one will be OBVIOUS before ever hooking up a tool.
You have every right to a full on "hissy".
Sadly until you KNOW the mechanic and shop you're dealing with well it's never easy to know if you're getting the actual COMPETENT diagnosis or the "let's just start replacing stuff and see what happens" treatment.
A mechanic with a good head on his shoulders and an ability to accurately diagnose is worth every penny you pay.........the other guy
...... not-so-much.
I'm with Go-bird on this one though....... glad to hear you found a reason to be more optimistic about your car! That's the happy ending I didn't see coming and best part of all this.
