    Re: Oil Change

The 02 takes 6qt. to fill with the filter change. The 03 to 05 takes 6 1/2 qt. to fill with cooler. I would also get the MotorCraft or Purolator for replacement.

      Re: Oil Change

---The last time I changed the oil (which was my first time under the Retro) I used the spare tire jack & a bottle jack. That was more work than it was worth & didn't give me the room under the car I really needed. I succeeded, but it was obvious to me there's a better way. I plan to use Wheat's method (post #20) -- saw a pair of ramps at Wal-Mart for $44 that I hope will give the car enough elevation.
---Chuck's post (#21) says the drain plug is on the front of the pan. Hmmm. Mine was at the right rear, which means it's best to use Gobird's tilt: left side a bit higher than the right gives more complete drainage. The oil filter I located on the front of the engine, but, true to Tbird engineering, it was wedged in between struts, braces, etc. Not much room to work in. I bought an end-cap filter wrench (Advance or AutoZone) & it worked fine. If you go to buy one of these wrenches, take your filter into the store with you so you can pick out the right-sized wrench.
---Finally, a big thank-you to LoneStar for all the good insider info about oil. He's as informed, if not more so, than C------r R-----s on the subject of motor oil. When he posts, I take notes. Worth repeating: oil designation is moving up SM to SN, but you'll find both on the shelf side-by-side at this time. The Retro ain't getting any younger, so give it all the help you can by buying SN. Leave the SM for the lubricationally uninformed & the oil illiterate.

First, thanks.... Second, if you wan the neatest ramps on the block then go to www.raceramps.com. They are way more than $44. but they are way cooler.

But I do have to correct you on one thing. SL was the standard through 2004 with SM the standard 2005 - 2010. Now SN. The basic difference between SL and SM is formulations to allow the cats to be more effective. SN, even more so. Additionally, ZDDP parts per million have been reduced but for cars with roller lifters or overhead cams that is not as important as with older cars with flat tappets. Other additives are being used that is just fine for roller lifters and overhead cams. These additives are not what you need however for flat tappet engines.

No more than it is "recommended" for Jag & Land Rover current V8 engines. This same oil (SLX) use to be recommended by VW for certain engines. It should be fine but I suspect it is only available at dealerships and somewhat expensive. Think about Pennzoil Ultra 5W20... hard to beat this one without moving to a boutique oils.

                  Lonestar,

Thanks for your response. This is kind of what I figured. I think, but don't know for sure, it was developed in conjunction with Jaguar since they just went to 15,000 mile/1 year oil change intervals on their new 5.0 liter V8. I'm sure you are right that it's expensive if it is bought at the parts dept. I've checked, and the Castrol SLX doesn't seem to be available anywhere else.

If you got the type that allows you to remove the ramp part once the car was lifted then absolutely. The one piece set would be no different than any other ramps in regards to reaching stuff under the car.

                      Re: Oil Change

...checked my manual again....this engine takes 5w20...like all the other recent Ford and other products...so dealers can service from their bulk oil distribution...no special oil here!
