Re: How fast will it go ?

My Dad was a Ford dealer and in 1965 Ford brought Shelby Cobras to the District Sales Offices and loaned them out to dealers for a week at a time. I was 19 and that 289V8 Cobra would crank 165 with the top down. Wildest car I ever drove.

Re: How fast will it go ?

Fastest I've ever driven was 135 MPH in a 1987 Toyota Supra and the 1995 Lexus SC300 we have now. Funny that both cars have in-line 3 litre DOHC 24 valve 6cylinder engines and the top speed on both cars was supposed to be 145MPH, but I ran out of space/guts. The tires on the Supra were Goodyear Gatorbacks that a lot of high performance cars were using during that time period, but I had a couple of blowouts at freeway speeds with them so I was really up-tight at 135 with those tires.

Re: How fast will it go ?

I did over 125 in my Bird the day after I brought it home new. I did 136 in my Magnum RT somewhere in New Mexico on old 66 and an indicated 149 in my 1970 Corvette 454 when it was new back in 1970.

Those are my fastest speeds and I won't do them again. Incidentally, I think the Vette had more, but the front end started to lift. The next year, Chevy put front air dams on the 1971 Corvettes trying to keep them on the ground.

Re: How fast will it go ?

I did 139 (confirmed by GPS) on my way back from Texas Thunder. Had top down, bags on the luggage rack, slight head wind, almost new Z rated tires and a SCT tune that removed the speed limit. I felt like I had hit top end under those conditions so I backed off. I think 145+ is very doable under the right conditions.

On the negative side, it felt extremely light. Did not act like it was floating but it was sure not hugging the ground very tight. I am sure my bad aerodynamic situation was part of that. A cross wind could have created real problems.

I was curious and the situation was a wide open Interstate. The devil made me do it.
Note...the devil was driving a Porsch Boxer that saw the same opportunity and went for it....when he jumped on it, I followed him.

I highly doubt I will be doing it again.

Re: How fast will it go ?

I have gotten mine up to 160. I stop there cause my tires are rate 170 and i dont want to risk a blowout on them.

Nineteen and got to drive a Cobra. Bet everything else seemed slow and quiet after that.

I have to agree with GoBird's first sentence the tech manual states 143 is the limit. However, I'm having some difficulty with his second sentence, I can only say Spence got up to 55 at Thunder Fever, radar gun Paul was using. Has anyone else out there seen a faster speed from GoBird? Please post with supporting documentation.

Good one, Bill. Reminds me to throw that thing in the car again. It sure cuts down on the tall tales!

Now, in defense of my friend Spence, I did see him put in a few nice passes on the trip between Kerrville and the coast, but I doubt he was 2/3 of the way to the rev limiter.

"Jackass" Star Ryan Dunn Dies in Car Accident

The one-car accident happened on Route 322 around 2:30 a.m., according to Officer Geiger with West Goshen police. The 2007 Porsche 911 GT3 shot through about 40 yards of trees before it hit the last one and exploded into flames, according to police. The police press release (.PDF) reads, "Preliminary investigation revealed that speed may have been a contributing factor to the accident."

Paul, No, I only hit around 100 mph on a couple of those passes. But what do you expect at trying to keep up with the Crazy Man.

I think extreme alcohol consumption had more to do with this crash than speed...

                                Here's what's left when you hit a tree in a Porsche 911 at 130mph.
