How about $790 on 1/2 acre property, two story built in 1979, nice house, nice neighborhood, in lakes (2) community, with HOA owned swimming pools (2), clubhouse, tennis courts (4), top-noch public schools in the state including HS rated in the "top ten"?
The downside - there is a property tax on autos - $189 for 2011 on the Tbird, but even with this, it is a cheap place to retire.

So, I pay about $708 per month while you pay $790 per year.

    Seems fair to me (not).

But, I can't get the wife to move away from her family, and we've been in this house since 1980 and the town since the early 70's.

On the plus side, the house is worth over 500K and, due to locale, didn't getting banged around as much with the fall of the market.

But still, Jersey real estate taxes are really nasty.

      Elle,
What do you think about this? A law was just passed in GA doing away with the property/ad valorem tax on newly purchased autos. You will pay a 6% sales tax when you purchase a car, and that will be it - no more yearly tax as long as you own the vehicle - only a $20 license tag charge each year. On the cars you already own you will keep paying the yearly property tax on your birthday.

Lucky you, Claude! Here is how it works in Norfolk. When purchasing a car (new or used) you pay
        1. sales tax (state)
        2. property tax (city - $4.33 per $100 of car's value)
        3. registration fee (state - varies, predicated on type of vehicle)
        4. registration fee (city)
After that, we continue to pay 2, 3 & 4 annually, forever!

          Jerry,
The main reason real estate taxes are so low in some GA counties is there is an exemption for the school tax portion when you turn age 62. Not all counties do this, I guess it depends on their financial condition. The school tax portion of my bill reduced it 60%. Cobb County has one of the best reputations for financial management in GA. If you live in the city limits of Atlanta/Fulton County, it's a whole different ball game.

So, your tax bill would have been, roughly, $1,975 per year?

THE INHUMANITY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (just kidding; I envy you)

I was just informed by our family accountant (my wife) that our taxes are now over 9K per year.

We have relatives/friends in nearby towns with houses much older than ours, with lower market values, on property about half our size, paying about 10K in real estate taxes.

Now you can understand why I only have one retro. (kidding again)

Getting back to the Topic of this thread. I spotted this beauty on Ebay this morning. Item # 270972509286 it's a 2004 TBird with 4 days left listed by a private owner in California. The guy says he's owned three and this is his favorate. He says it's one of 730 built LMB and one of 51 with a White HT. It has partial White trim and only about 9K miles. High bid right now is a little over 22K reserve not met. Asking 25.5K, I think he might get it. Leroy

What do I know, maybe I'm paranoid, he has a reason for all this. And after all it is his favorite, guess that's why he is selling it! LOL

Did you see the 1,800 mile Inspiration Yellow with full accent and hardtop on eBay?
Bad as an investment and nobody had any fun with it.

We have an identical car with 4,100 miles but we are gonna start driving it now that I am retired.

I agree, Russ...drive that car. Don't leave those (s)miles for someone else. These cars are meant to be driven and I'm selfish enough to know I want to enjoy it rather than hope it'll be worth more $$ later on for someone else.

The way I am reading the description there were two owners. the original owner purchased it from a dealer in wisconson and had it delivered to California, then had it shipped to Florida when he moved there. The second and current owner purchased it from him and shipped it to his home in Arizona then he moved to California. His stats are accurate, it is just one of 51 with the white hard top of the 730 Light Ice Blue metalics built.

That's enough for me to stay away from it. I don't think, and I know from my experience, that many people just don't get rid of wonderful and trouble-free cars in that short of a time period.

I guess we need to address the spare tire issue on our 2002 Thunderbird regardless of use or storage. I like the idea of lowering the air pressure in the Firestone spare but might try to buy a new spare.

I am ready for some top down cruising. There are some groups that do Friday night poker runs and raise money for a volunteer food pantry.

Sure am glad I read this thread! Thanks!!!
