Those things are a real pain. and so was the cassett players, especially when they age and parts begin to get brittle. I am in the send it off group.

I’ve had this problem many times on my 2002 NM.

Here’s a quick fix that has always worked for me, although it sometimes takes a few tries:

1. Select a CD by pushing one of the numbered buttons
2. Once the CD is selected, immediately push another CD part way into the selected slot and ‘jiggle’ it a bit (preferably one you don’t mind scratching or damaging, or a blank CD)
HOLD ONTO THE CD AS YOU INSERT IT AND THEN REMOVE IT

3. Repeat step # 2 as needed until the ‘loaded’ CD you’re trying to either play or eject does something (plays or ejects).
4. Press the ‘Eject All/Auto Eject’ button after the ‘tool’ CD is no longer partially inserted in the load slot.

Granted, this is a decidedly ‘low tech’ solution, but it has always worked for me. I realize this method sounds counter intuitive; why would you try to ‘jam’ a CD into a player that is already jammed? It just works. If not the first time, but the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th try (sometimes more). It's quicker and cheaper than removing the entire CD/radio assembly and taking in for repair. Pushing a ‘dummy’ or ‘expendable’ CD in the player this way won’t damage the CDs already loaded, as the ‘dummy’ CD should only make contact with the TOP side of the other CDs, NOT the bottom surface, which contains the audio data.

A little patience and ‘tinkering’ with this method almost always fixes the problem, until of course, it occurs again. I’m not aware of any permanent damage that might be done using this method, but the entire unit would otherwise have to be removed anyway, so you really aren’t risking much.

I don’t know for sure what causes this CD player jam. Others have mentioned bad gears, excessive heat, etc. I experimented with using an alternate CD rather than a credit card because a CD covers more surface area than a credit card and for some reason helps clear the jam. You have to perform the above steps quickly and before the ‘CD Error’ message re-appears. A little practice and you’ll be a pro!

Was browsing USA Today and saw this article on the automotive CD player. With satellite radio and USB connections for things like thumb drives and iPods, the automotive CD player is going the way of the dinosaur. Some cars have phased them out already.

Do I have a GREAT solution for you!!! My 6CD changer on my 2002 Ford Thunderbird also died 3 months ago - same "CD Error". Ford is no help and in fact have a "not our problem attitude". I searched and searched the internet and possibly 100 sites and just as many phone calls. Upon hearing it was a FORD 6CD changer they almost 100% told me they would not even work on them - advised me to junk it.

I spoke to Charles who has been in business for 30 + years and he did not shut down when I said Ford 6 CD changer. I live in NM and had a local electronics shop remove the unit and shipped to Oklahoma City on 8/29. On 9/5 or 6 I got a call from Charles - they could fix it and his estimate was very reasonable. My repaired unit was returned on 9/10 and reinstalled by local shop on 9/11. It worked PERFECT!!!!! They do provide a 90 day guarantee which is conditional but reasonable on a 11 year old unit. I am totally satisfied.

I had this issue issue this past Saturday (1st time loading the 6cd changer) where I loaded two disks in the changer and decided I wanted to change the order.. Sure enough, when I tried to eject the first it jammed.. I got the CD error on the display and I could hear the disk spinning in there.. I tried 3x to disconnect the battery fix but that didn't help.. So I grabbed an unused cd and jammed it into the slot right after I hit the eject button.. I held onto the disk but put it nearly 90% into the changer slot.. Wiggled it a bit and after 2x trying this the disk that was jammed slid out on its own after pulling out the one I was usuing to slid into the slot.. Then I hit the eject for the last one and that one came right out also.. I then pereceded to reload the three that I was going to load into the changer and all 3 went in and is playing fine..

Seeing I just bought this 2002 a few weeks ago maybe the CD player was suffering from inactivity.. Right now I only have disks in 3 slots waiting for my better half to make her selections on what she wants.. I maybe swapping out the units for a Pioneer GPS - Siurus MP3 unit in a few months.. But LA Phil post seemed to help me big time.. Thanks...

A few days after we bought Judy's 2014 Escape, we realized it didn't have a CD player. But we found a USB port that we can play music from her I-phone or my I-pod. No fuss, no muss.

I remember back in 2003, I bought the white hardtop from a guy in OH. We met in PA. My CD player went on the fritz on the way back. Dang it, long drive and I can't play my tunes. Stopped and put the edge of a credit card in there and jiggled, it ejected, reloaded, problem solved.

CD changers are phased out but a single CD player is still good.
Got rid of my 2013 Ram with no CD player (just memory stick). I spent many hours getting the CDs converted for the memory stick. Some CDs were ancient and not conversion friendly especially when the set contained 5 CDs.

Got a 2015 Escape with USB memory player and a single CD player.
Best combination I liked, was my 2010 Ram Truck. It had a single CD player and a Hard drive and software to copy CDs and organize all music on the hard drive.

I had this problem 3 yars ago. So, I decided to remove it from the dash, open the radio and fix it by removing manually the CDs one by one by hands once open. However, in case of, I have a spare unit if I have to switch it.
