My hard top has been on the hard top hoist all summer. The weather is getting cooler around here and I think by the time we go to Charlston in Oct. it will be back on the car. That way I can show off my lighted port holes.

        Re: TOP ON TOP OFF

Well the mercury took a nose dive here in Florida last week & thoughts of getting the hard top back on bounced around for awhile but quickly left as the forecast called to have weather back in the 80's. My wife & I took the 02 blue out for a drive today & the outside temp read 83 & should stay that way for another week or so & than you guessed it another cold front. We both like the look of the hard top but still like the top down on days like today.

Yesterday it was in the high 70's, today it's 28*! We've had rain, sleet and a little snow. The temps are still dropping. My Birds are in thier respective Nests, and none of us are sticking our noses outside today! I wanted to get the hardtop off the '57 before I put it up again, but that didn't happen.

I'm not gloating, but just like Sandgnat, Fall and Winter, except for January is when Charleston, SC weather is just plain "Top Down weather almost every day". This week I have lowered the top at least once each day and that would be impossible with a hardtop installed. Hey I grew up in Chicago, I know snow and cold weather but if you move south you'll experience a whole new "Winter experience". "Heah in Challlston, you sufffa tru da summma an enjoy da winta weatha".

*For those of you who are not familiar with the way Charlestonians speak, the "r"s are usually not pronounced, they apparently migrated to Boston, MA where the "r"s are added to words which don't have them, like "Cuber" for Cuba.

Mine went on yesterday. What a pain in the A! Those darn screw threads are so difficult to catch. Finally after a least an hour of trying all the various remedies I got it tight. Clearly there was a better way to design this thing. I'd just forget about the whole exercise if the car were not so breathtaking with that roof on.

Jim, next year when you're ready to put the top on, send me a PM and I'll come over and help. It should only take 5-10 minutes. I can also help you fine-tune the fit to your car. Phil

The hardtop went on our merlot 2004 on Sunday (12/03/2006). A neighbor helped my wife and me. We like the way it looks with the hardtop, but we plan to take it off in early March. This car was made to be driven with the top down!

I have ordered the hoist for my Christmas gift. Last week the temp in Texas was in the 20's.... this week we are back in the upper 70's. Perfect top down weather Can't stand the idea of doing all that work without the assist of the lift.

Cynthia: I recently installed an electric lift as well. Tops been on for over two years, but it will be off in the spring.

To reply "on topic" I wish my one car garage had clearance for a lift. Sadly that's not the case. I know you're gonna love it Cynthia!

                            Now for a detour:

There's a hardtop relay going on in our area this Sat. You might want to tag along. It's an opportunity to cruise with other New Birds and get to know some other members. Click here for the current plans:

                            http://www.thunderbirdnest.com/forums/showpost.php?p=214635&postcount=41

Give 5Bird7 (Dot) a pm if you're interested.

Also, we have a day cruise coming up in January. Watch the Texas subforum for an announcement. You and I could start from this area. I've seen a Platinum alot recently, but it's never in a situation that I can make personal contact. I called and left a message on your answering machine.

Something I noticed that might be related to your problem... Naturally, I try to tighten both sides of the top while sitting in the same seat - usually the drivers side. But, I could never tighten (catch) the screw on the passenger side. But, by simply moving my butt over to the passenger side, I could easily catch that screw. Same in reverse. Don't know why it's so difficult for me from the "wrong" side, but it is.

Unless your wife can bench press 300 lbs, it's a really bad idea. I enlist a (male) neighbor to assist. I bought a hoist shortly after purchasing the car, but have never gotten around to installing it.
