Throwback Thursdays - A Trip Down TBN Memory Lane

This was too easy for the people who were on the Thunder Out West trip.
I hope everyone the that trip got a kick out of the stop at the Golden Gate Bridge.

Did you see my handiwork while you were there?

1. I designed the bicycle railing that goes between the roadway and the sidewalks.
2. I also designed the North Viaduct Seismic Retrofit (the bridge portion between the North Anchorage House and the North Abutment):

a. Replaced 3 support towers
b. Installed Lead-Rubber Seismic Isolator bearings between the tops of the new towers and the original bridge superstructure.

Last week's turned out to be pretty easy. Kudos to our resident bridge engineer, the one and only SugarDaddy, Jerry D.

Well it's Friday and we don't know yet what we hoped we would on Tuesday, so we can have a late throwback as well.

This copper wire scorpion has been hanging from Jewel's rearview mirror for a while now. It was added to the bolo tie and the fuzzy dice (that hung there until the string broke recently) during an event in the not so distant past.

It's still Thursday .... barely. This ball cap was given to me by the owner of the establishment that is embroidered on it during one of our good sized caravans.

Actually, he gave me the hat because he was happy I brought him a bunch of paying customers. That was after I had negotiated a decent discount for everyone. A trick I learned from you, DavidA.

I do remember this stop on our way out to Keystone. A great stop along the way and a great lunch in the dinner as well.

I am always amazed at the places that you find for us to stop at and see. If you ever publish a "TBN Road Atlas" with all the routes you have taken I will be the first in line to purchase one. I would add every trip to my bucket list with a stop at each of the amazing places you have found to visit.

The roads and sights of America, not to mention Canada and Europe, have been brought to life through TBN.

That's very kind of you, Ted. However, I can only take partial credit for the planning of our many caravans and travel events. A bunch of people have been involved with putting them together over the years. The way they are planned has had to evolve over the years due to the locations we've chosen to go to and the number of people involved. It was fairly easy to work out the logisics for 7 cars from 4 states to meet up on an over night trip to Destin, Florida for the first TBN event in October 2002. It required a lot more planning to get all the working parts together for the 20+ car loads to navigate around in Virginia for DC Thunder and Beyond in September 2016.

When we tried our very first travel event to the Maritime Provinces in 2009 we only had to worry about 3 cars and 6 people. We had loose ideas about where we wanted to go, but had no exact route or lodging reservations until the day of arrival. It worked out fine and we had a lot of fun, with the only "special lodging adventure" that was a little tough was all 6 of us sharing a small 3 bedroom cabin with only one bathroom. Not everyone would appreciate that.

As the events became more popular the increase in people and cars required much more rigidity in planning of lodging. Some of the places in the western US we've been to have been challenging to work out a route that puts us in a large enough town to have 20+ rooms available at a reasonable rate. It's always a puzzle, sometimes there are 24 pieces and other times there are a thousand.

One phrase we learned from Frits during our EuroThunder Tour that usually holds true on our trips when asked about a last minute change - "We aren't going there."

Ted: I don't think it was Keystone, it was Black Hills. Keystone was in Pennsylvania, Paul was in Europe with us for that one.

We've also missed a lot due to time restraints. I think our next trip will be to stay a while in one place and explore the area in more detail. We're leaning towards the northeast again and explore Maine and Vermont more thoroughly. due to our advancing age, I think less travel and more local exploration. Even with the last few trips, we;ve tried to not drive as far in a day as we've done when we started these trips.

David you are correct, it was the Black Hill event that we were headed to. But my reference to Keystone was the town that was our final destination for the Black Hills event.

I sure hope the boarder will open again an i will be able to join in on the trip Maine and Vermont. My travels throug that area of the United States was rather rushed and I do need to learn to slow down and enjoy the areas more so.
