Re: 2002 Motor Trend car of the year?

Look at the list of Motor Trend Cars of the Year. For the most part they were innovative at the time. I actually own 2 of them, the 2002 T-Bird and 2005 Magnum. BOTH were discontinued early, but BOTH are terrific cars.

The Thunderbird, as Dot says, continues to put a smile on my face after 8 years, and continues to impress the people on the street. There has almost never been a time that I park the car in a public lot that someone doesn't comment, "Nice Car" or something else positive. I have NEVER heard a negative comment about the car.

Yes it was overly priced, and VERY poorly marketed by Ford. It was also caught in the Jack Nasser fiasco and I think that helped kill it as nobody at Ford wanted to stand behind the car at that time. Despite the original problems, it remains a great car and is an icon. The people buying them used are really getting a bargain classic now. Reading the newbee's comments, you can see that most are enjoying the car as we original buyers have been enjoying them.

C&D's comments about the suspension and design are unfounded. Just as with the original baby birds, the car was never intended to be a track machine but a comfortable cruiser. It is what it is as does what it does as it was designed to do. If you want a racer, but a Vette. How many passers-by say "nice car" about a Vette in a parking lot?
Unbelivable TBN trips including ALL of the lower 48 States plus 9 Canadian Provinces, 8 European Countries, 3 Caribbean Countries, Countless National Parks and have attended well over 100 TBN Events since 2001 and counting. Best of all ... fabulous friends.

Has anyone attempted to see if any of the other cars on the list have a web site like ours. Not sure you find one. Nuff said I love the car.

This hurts - no offense to the platinum haired ladies with small dogs. Maybe this is a reason to turn all of the driving of the Tbird over to the wife.

You know I don't take it personally. Those tools at Car and Driver are part of the hate America crowed. If the Europeans put four tires and headlights on a tord, Car and Driver would be singing about how wonderful the lines are "the smell just adds to the flavor"!

You have to agree there are some pretty gruesome autos listed:

                  1971 Chev Vega
                  1997 Chev Malibu
                  1980 Chev Citation
                  1974 Ford Mustang II

Claude, I agree those cars are not the "best" but anyone who reads C&D will tell you it is a Foreign car stroke fest!

Honestly the Vega was a cool car. I had one with a built 350 in it and loved it!

"Unfortunately, Ford went cheap engineering the new T-Bird, grabbing most of the chassis pieces and many interior elements straight out of the lackluster Lincoln LS sedan’s parts bin."

Seems history repeats as much the same could be said for parts-sharing in the early baby birds. IMO, none of their comments are worth responding to as it's only their opinion.

Shon, at least you had a good engine. As I remember that car, it came with an aluminum 4 cylinder that had some bad problems. As for the others, I would not describe them as "not the best". I would describe them as PsOS as I drove several of them as rental cars when I was traveling.

                            Hi there,

We all know that nowadays it is a truly international market and just because a car has a Ford badge on it, (or not in the case of our Retros), does not make it ALL American.

I know the birds were assembled in the U.S. but I'm pretty sure that the engines were built in a factory in Europe, (Wales if I remember correctly), and even the transmission I think is French.

I do stand to be corrected on this but I'm sure I read this some time ago, might even be here on the nest somewhere.

I love this car for cruisin around in, - it's not an out and out sports car but it looks good and drives nicely and it even growls at 2,000 revs.

Each to their own I guess.

                            Gordon.

I'm pretty sure the engine was all built in the US, even though the base block was designed by Jaguar, the heads were not, but I do know that most of the tranny and parts for it were built/ assembled in the US at the plant in Lima, Ohio - there had been a data entry error on the early inventory sheets as Ford does have a factory in France that builds those transmissions for other models - but not the tbird, nor the LS.

Dot, did you know our friend John Nijhuis was involved in producing the exhaust for our Birds? He told me he first got the specs for the system 4 years before the first production was made public.
