I changed out the hood scoop without removing all the padding on the inside of the hood. use a small flat blade screwdriver covered with duct tape to pry the old scoop off and simply push the new one on until the clips engage. The dealer showed me how to do this and it's quick and works. I have a black 03 and the new hood scoop looks great.

    Good Luck,

Just goes to show you there are more ways than one to skin a cat. Dropping the insulation is pretty easy too. Took me less than 10 minutes. Plus I got to see the autograph.

How do you remove the clips and can they be re-used after removal?
Is there a pry tool required (i.e. pocketknife hehe)?
My luck has been I break about half of them - then have to replace w/ new clips that dont match! When the hood pad is removed do you just
tap the hood scoop out or is there a 'procedure'. Other than the fear of damaging the finish - I Like the idea of Prying it loose from the top then Pushing the new one in?!?!?!
I have one of the chrome bezels now - just want to make sure to install the simplest / neatest way!
      Any Help appreciated! ! ! !
      THANKS

Re: Chrome Hood Scoop Bezel on PCR

You need to squeeze/pinch the small tabs on the clip and push it through from the underside of the hood. When I did mine, I just used long nose pliers. When I got my bezel, it had new clips on it.

Education is when you read the fine print; experience is what you get when you don't.

You can install the scoop without removing the under hood insulation. I did it to either Sally's car or the wife of Riverside Ford owner's car at Destin many years ago. But I do recommend going in from the bottom. It's much easier. A putty knife makes a good to slide under the pins to pry them out. They should be un-damaged and can be reused once the new bezel is in.

Re: Chrome Hood Scoop Bezel on PCR

The one problem I heard from those that were removing the bezel from the front when the cars were new, is that sometimes the clips would break off the original, thus making the old bezel practically worthless except as a souvenier, so most of us did the removal by removing the hood liner and compressing the clips from the inside and pushing the bezel out. I haven't looked at how the clips are attached on the bezel so don't know if they are replaceable or not.

I also recommend going from underneath and using the needle-nose pliers to compress the clips. If I can do it easily, anybody can. I also suggest placing a sheet over the engine compartment so if any of the hood liner fastners get loose they won't get lost.

When I brought my Bird into the Ford dealer for an oil change, they installed the chrome bezel for free. Got the old part back in perfect condition.

The clips should be replaceable, but you can see the bent point that presses into the plastic tab makes it almost impossible to get the clip off while on the car.

                    ...
As Marty suggested, I used a putty knife to remove the plastic anchors holding the hood liner. Also did as Claude mentioned... put a blanket over the engine before prying, to catch any anchors that fell (some of them are a pretty good reach)

Removing the bezel from the front would make me concerned about marring the paint behind the bezel, evein if the blade of the screwdriver was covered with duct tape. JMO. Of course, once you have the old bezel off, you've already done the hard part. To "install" the new bezel, just slide it into position and give it a good strong push!

Re: Chrome Hood Scoop Bezel on PCR

I just installed my new new chrome hood scoop. It was not easy.
To get the pushpins out, you need two putty knives or one and strong fingernails if you want them intact. Mine are all reusable. I can think of other tools that might work, like old fasioned nail pullers.
The 2002 scoop had different clips. You need to compress them with right angle needle nose pliers and then pound them out with a wooden dowel.
The new chrome hood scoop's clips are the over center types that can be forced either way, in or out, and can be popped out from the outside with a screwdriver. Easy to steal.
We needed a combination of, wood block, rags for cushioning, and something to hit with from the outside, with the hood down, to get it to seat to my satisfaction.
So when one says the dealer poped it out from the top, it most likely was not a 2002 Tbird.

Re: Chrome Hood Scoop Bezel on PCR

I forgot to mention, when I had the hood liner off, I noticed that the aluminum foil had a long tear from the pasenger side to the front. Someone put a piece of aluminum tape on it to connect it to the other part of the foil. I should have taken a picture of it. The tear looked like it happened in the manufacturing process (stress). The glue on the foil tape probable insulates and does no good. Lucky there is a ground strap on both corners of the hood liner. Oh well, no one will ever see it.
Has anyone else seen this type of defect???

If so, it was not a 2002 bird. Different clips in the 2002.

Nice read up on what and how you all have been doing this change out--

I can see how nice that would look --on any Bird, so naturally I am interested..

however, no one has said where to get the chrome hood scope.....I suppose it's safe to say I should check the "search " button"--correct?

                            Post edit--I checked "search"--wow!-$85 --seems a lot--is that a lot?--can I find them lower?--or just go for it--and that's plastic too I found--? .any comments-Thanks- Tom

well, you could find them for about triple that price if you order the wrong part # and get the "2002" chromed bezel. Stick with the one you found at that price. not bad.

I also replaced my 2002 hood bezel with a 2005 chrome one and I did it from the front without damaging anything. Just takes some caution to make sure you don't crack anything or scratch the paint. It can be done though . . .
