  • Hats for bald heads

Totally bald and have very fair skin.....must wear a hat when topless.

I have been wearing a baseball cap and have been surprised that the wind does not seem to bother it too much. However, I would like something that offers a bit more sun protection for back of my neck for times I expect to be driving for long periods with the sun beating down. I have been looking at some of the Tilley hats with a small brim and a bit of the mesh in the crown for cooling. The LTM3 AIRFLO model has the smaller brim with a chin strap plus it snaps to fold up the sides (Aussy style) if desired. I think this combination should be able to deal with the wind as well as a baseball cap.

For those of you who need to wear a hat like me, what have you had good luck with? Anyone have experience with the Tilley hats in a driving situation? I have never owned a Tilley hat but they have a great reputation but are pricey.

As a side note, for sun protection, I started wearing a long sleeve shirt when I expect to be driving in the sun for a long period. I use a very lightweight shirt with many ventilation opening and a SP 50+ rating for sun protection. The shirt was actually made for fishermen to use in hot sunny areas. I have found that it is actually cooler driving in the sun with this shirt on than it is with a normal short sleeve shirt. I got mine at BassPro Shop but they are available from many retailers that cater to the sportsman market

I use to own a Harley before my bird. When in Florida I noticed guys wore a cloth wrap without a helmet. I still have a couple and use them sometime for top down driving in the strong sun. They also protect the back of your neck too. One of the ones I have has mesh on the sides. Here is a link to what I am talking about. You can find others if you do a search.

      Paul,

The Tilley hats are an excellent choice. Several of the TBNers have one, including my wife. I plan on getting one in the near future.

The shirt you mentioned sounds like a reasonable alternative to slathering on the sunscreen.

I have a Tilley hat that I wear when out in the sun. But the brim is too floppy in the wind, while driving top down. Try to find one with a stiff brim, if you can.

You will need the chin straps, on the Tilley hat, to keep it on your head while driving top down. Good luck in your search!

          I use one of these.
I use the chin strap at freeway speeds just in case.

I always wear one of these. The tail keeps the sun off my neck and the soft fur just makes me feel so darn sexy....

I wear a Tilley, they are very good hats, great for all weather and sun blocking.

But Rusty, no chin strap and just think of all the PETA people you will %&* off.

David and I both wear a Tilley hat with the vents in the cap part. The brims are fairly stiff and you only need the chin strap when driving at higher speeds such as the Interstate. We have never had a problem with them and they keep our neck and ears from getting sunburned.

Thanks for the tip about the shirt. I was looking for something similar so I do not have to use so much sunscreen. I use a long sleeve denim shirt over whatever shirt I am wearing that day, but I like your idea better. I looked for a long sleeve gauze type shirt, but could not locate one that would work.

Somehow I just can't picture driving a Tbird with a doo rag on. I do like Rusty's "gettin back to nature" idea though!

I wear a baseball cap. Remarkably it stays on even though my head pokes above the windshield. I confess to keeping a hand on it pretty often.

It is a World Wide Sportsman model XPS. I really like it. Very lightweight with lots of ventilation. There are other brands and variations but I decided on this one after checking out some of the others at my local BassPro.
