  • Skirts - What do you think.

I have a beautiful black 2002 with red and black interior. I am thinking about adding these skirts. I love the look of the 55,56 and 57 with the skirts. These are not too big as some seem to be and fit in the wheel well only. Open the attached....

Like the idea of fitting inside the wheel well lip or flush with the quarter panel. Your picture is a bit dark with being a black car and hard to see some of the detail of the skirt.

ps. Are those wheels for the 2004 and are they stock if you have more ?

The picture is a cut and paste from Thunderbird concepts. May have to look there. But thanks for the comment.

I bought the wheels last Summer from Motorspot. They were going to discontinue them for a while, but they may be in production again. This is the website: http://www.hobbycar.com/.. I just went out there and did not see them. You might e-mail Linda at linda@motorspot.com.

I'm not a fan of the skirts on Tbirds. Not even on the 55', 56', and 57' Birds. I prefer the open look.

I like the Kelsey- Hayes look wire wheels (love them with the black-wall tires) but the skirts - not so much.

Don't pay any attention those "others". They will be just perfect for your "B" Bird - in fact they look so good I just added a set to my want list.

Re: Skirts - What do you think.

Skirts, or Fender Panties as Tom McCahill used to call them look good on some cars and awful on others.

They looked great on the '56 Crown Vic and the '55 Bel Air (see photos) but they would have destroyed the classic looks of the '53 Skylark where the full radius rear wheel openings enhanced the design.

IMO the '57 T Bird styling was improved by skirts but for the Retro Birds, not so much. If the design team didn't include them from the start there was a reason.

Re: Skirts - What do you think.

Charles, though these skirts just fit the wheel well area, are you sure the skirts will have enough clearance for the wires?

Re: Skirts - What do you think.

For what it's worth, the wire wheels of this type first appeared on the 1962 Thunderbird Sports Roadster. In addition the 62 Sports Roadster was the first Thunderbird without fender skirts to better show off the wire wheel and to allow room for the center knockoff ornament. Later modifications to the knockoff flattened it out for the rear wheels to allow for the use of fender skirts if desired.

                        I agree with Rick, Bronzebird.

2002-05 design team didn't think they should be on as part of a retro

I THINK THE EARLY BIRDS NEED THE SKIRTS, THE RETRO BIRDS LOOK BETTER WITHOUT.
