Re: Skirts - What do you think.

In reading this debate it reminds me of how diverse we were in the fifties when it came to our cars. Most guys wanted to individulise their car. We didn't have a gazillion catalogues to pick threw but we had junk yards everywhere and they were cheap. Parts from one brand put on another brand was the style of the day and the Merc skirts were hot and if they looked add on all the better. This began the custom car movement and many didn't like them and just as many did. Hot junk yard items were '49 Plymouth bumpers, 54 Pontiac grill center, 50 Merc grill 53 Chevy grill bars. The cruiser skirts were the most popular as they fit more cars than any other. Economics 101.

50 Merc grilles into 49/50 Fords. 58 Buick grilles into 57 Chevys.

I took the whole grille out of my 57 BelAir and rigged up some brackets for the parking/turn signals. This exposed the radiator in a bad way.

Had my 57 Olds 98 convert repainted 62 Chevy Honduras Maroon.

Now, I want everything to be stock on my Galaxie.

The 56 Tbird skirts were flush with the body. The one pictured has a ridge around the weel well. I don't like that. I liked the 56 flush ones. But I don't remember what I did with them when I took them off in 1961.

I like the look of the 56 skirts with the chrome lip.

Bear in mind, it was the 50's, chrome was "in", assuming the whole skirt wasn't chromed (that was just plain ugly, IMHO, unless everything behind the rear wheel was also chromed).

Skirts like the 57 Merc Cruiser skirts were big time.

Saw a few 57 Fords with Cruiser skirts. Looked great.
