Just had all the COPs replaced after 3 failed within a 4 month period on my 2005 bird.

Marta, were they all replaced under Ford's special warranty?

03 with 48K miles. Just started hesitating after owning a week. Dealer description - replaced boot on cylinder 5 b/c of oil and coil on cylinder 2. Only about 100 miles since and no problems.

I had to get one coil and one spark plug changed today. There was no oil in the well so I don't really know if it was the usual problem or just a bad spark plug. It was really outrageous all the things these people wanted to fix when I went in there with a hesitation problem at 50 miles per hour. They wanted to change out all the coils and plugs, the suspension is bad, the front brakes are close to needing to be replaced, and they said I needed to clean out the system from all the problems caused by the bad plug and wanted to sell me a full set of tires. Thank goodness I got some advice from one of our "in-house TBN experts" -- thank you very much Ron -- and just got the one plug and coil replaced but still at a cost of $164.65 for parts and $174 for labor -- needless to say I won't be taking my car back there.

OK, finally had COP issues with the '03. (build 12/2002) My local Ford store pushed back on warranty work in the past so I removed the coil covers to take a look see. #3 and#7 were flooded with oil. #5 and #6 had obviously been changed out in the past as they had a different design. Called my "friendly" Ford dealer again and was told the coils are under extended warranty (I knew that) and the valve cover gaskets were a recall. they replaced two COPS, two plugs and both valve cover gaskets on Friday and all is well. Cost to me is zero. Terry DSB2003. Oh yes, when I picked up the car the cashier wanted to keep it for herself. Thought that might be difficult to explain to my wife so brought the car home.

Re: Cop Poll: 02 verses 03/05

The 02 lost 2 coils at the same time around 36K, now 50K and a very occasional misfire on the over-run which may be a 3rd coil starting to go.

The 05 lost 2 coils at 22K, on leaving the dealer after having them replaced, a 3rd one failed (before she even hit the road). As Cristine only drives about 3,000 miles a year the odds are high that it will be a long time before another goes, (touch wood).

28,000+ miles, built August 2001. No problems. If it is going to happen, I hope it is in the next 5 years while the extended warranty is still in effect.

The COPS on my 2002 bird started acting up at around 46,000 miles. Intermittent misfiring , but no codes were set UNTIL the misfiring continued for quite a few miles. That was the real pain in the ass. I replaced one that coded and then another one coded a week later and that was it for me. I went to advance auto and ordered the remaining 6 and installed them. While i was in there i also decided to replace the valve cover gaskets on both sides. Its a PIA but i hate doing things twice. I took lots of pictures if anyone wants to see whats involved. Changing the COPS themselves is not a difficult job,it's more difficult to remove the COP coil covers because the bolts that hold them on are not all readily accessible. Not the end of the world or anything.

Just replaced my 4th ignition coil yesterday since buying my T-Bird in 2010. I bought my '02 T-Bird with 60,000 miles on it and almost immediately after buying it had to replace my 1st ignition coil. Have 70,000 miles on it now. Very unfair that Ford hasn't included the '02 in the extended warranty!! Have to take it to the Ford dealer each time for repair and it's getting expensive.

                            Randy,

I am very interested in the pictures. I believe there are instructions here for 2003 and later but I am not sure about the 2002.

Can you post them here? Or send me a private message and I will give you an email address.

If you are lucky enough to have multiple cars the poll will take more then one vote.

This poll was requested because of the engine difference between the 02's and the 03/04/05's. this is the reasoning behind the poll.

Just had the balance of the COPS replaced...3rd one was failing and wasn't willing to play the waiting game on the other 5. Wish I could change my vote on the poll!
