Re: Cop Poll: 02 verses 03/05

My 2002 over 70,000 miles and no cop problems whatsoever

My 2003 #7 went out at 40K miles (they replaced the whole side)
Today #4 went out at 44k miles (waiting to hear from dealer)
It was running pretty rough but no check engine light until I turned on the A/C

I re-read the Ford letter and noticed it mentioned that it was a one time fix...has anyone tried to have a replacement one replaced?

Back at L/M today .Had all the signs of another COPS last night.Hope they change out the last two if this is the problem today. So far 6 changed on my '04 with 35K on it.IMO Ford doesn't care about the inconvience it causes to us.If one is found on a side the other three should be changed as the vehicle is open for repairs anyway. I also have a friend with an '04 100K + and no COPS .His is a daily driver so I'm thinking the more you use it the better off you are.

The dealer just replaced #2 & #8. Daily driver, not garaged, 33,500 miles total. I put 5,500 of those miles on it since I bought it a year ago. Once I get the garage cleared out, maybe it'll fare better...

Yes, the car has been hesitating or coughing initially under heavy acceleration for a month. Hasn't been a serious problem, and finally had time to get it looked at before it got worse.
Ironically, they also found that it needs a tie rod cover. It took an hour and a half to fix the COP, but they kept the car all day while searching for the tie rod part with other local dealers. The next day, they gave up and let me have the car. They say they should get the part next week. Can't quite wrap my mind around that...

My 04 is at the dealer. #3 was replaced about a month ago. About a week later I noticed the first signs of another cop problem. I drive my bird about once or twice a week now and drove it again to the office and back to make sure I wasn't imagining a problema couple of weeks ago.

I'm surprised a wrench wasn't thrown today on the way to the dealer. Mileage today was 67,922. Tomorrow, I'll get the word on which one or ones are involved. With the first one I could have paid an additional $450+ and had all t6he others changed. Not going to happen, even if I have to make eight separate trips.

02 no problems and I hope I didn't just JIX myself by voting.

#2 repaced today. That makes #2 & #3. If the other 6 are going to fail, I wish they would go ahead and do it. Great 25 mile ride home; nice and smooth.

                        Lost one coil in each.

The '04 two years ago, at approximately 25,000 miles.

The '02 this year at approximately 60,000.

Which do I expect problems with from here?

Probably the '04. It gets fixed on Ford's nickle so only one has been replaced so far. 7 original coils with potential to follow the first failed coil to go.

The '02 is my problem so I swapped out all 8 coils a few weeks ago.
It's no guarantee but I'm hopeful that I get at least a few years on down the road before I'm back under the hood and swapping 'em out again.

                          It......... SUCKS!

                          This really is a dilemma.

I feel your pain. The idea that it takes all of 20 minutes to swap out 4 coils and you don't even get dirty doing it makes it a tough decision to "let the dealer" suck this up each time it happens.

I keep a set of coils in a drawer in my garage, or at least I did until I had to fix the '02 recently. The temptation to just "do it" when the '04 ate it's first coil was huge but even at a discounted price a set of 8 run $400.

It's right on that ratty edge of a decision between inconvenience and dealing with appointments and lost time vs how cheap I can be and hating the idea of blowing my own money on something Ford has acknowledged responsibility for.

My '04 has had 4 bad coils replaced, 1 at a time, in the past 1,500 miles, by Ford under the extended warranty/campaign. Symptoms returned yesterday. I'm scheduled tomorrow to have all plugs replaced (again) and all coils replaced, gaskets/seals etc. No signs of water or oil, just faulty coils.
If this doesn't solve the problem, I will likely sell the Bird. I bought it to drive, not park.

Rhonda, if you're trying to get the check engine light to come on, and you're having the COP symptoms, turn on the A/C and push the accelerator to the floor.

I didn't want to go to the dealer without knowing that the codes were stored so I tried it and the light came on instantly.
